Link21 Presentation and Conversation

Come learn about the Link21 program for a 2nd transbay rail crossing between San Francisco and the East Bay, connecting urban and intercity rail throughout the Northern California Megaregion, as envisioned by the California State Rail Plan.

This is a workshop format where we can ask questions and make comments about a range of topics:  how the project will weight BART vs standard gauge rail, connectivity to the Downtown Extension connecting Caltrain and High Speed Rail, how they will handle megaproject cost control, governance and decision-making, land use and housing, impacts and benefits for equity priority communities along the route? Bring your questions and thoughts.

Presenters:
Sadie Graham, BART, Link21 Acting Director
Camille Tsao, Link21 Program Manager for Capitol Corridor

Co-sponsored by Transbay Coalition, Friends of Caltrain, Streets for People, San Francisco Transit Riders, East Bay Transit Riders Union, Seamless Bay Area.

Planning New Southeast Caltrain Station

SF Planning and the San Francisco County Transportation Authority (SFCTA) are exploring options for future station locations on the Caltrain corridor in southeastern San Francisco. The Pennsylvania Ave Extension (PAX) rail tunnel is still under concept development, but is envisioned to bring Caltrain and High Speed Rail trains underground to eliminate grade crossings at 16th St and Mission Bay Dr. It may require the redesign or relocation of 22nd St station, and opens opportunities to serve Mission Bay and the Bayview with modern electric rail.

Come join Streets for PeopleFriends of Caltrain, and SF Transit Riders on Mon Nov 8th as we hear an update from SFCTA planners on this important project. Please RSVP to register. A Zoom link will be sent out by email shortly before the meeting.

Golden Gate Park Access & Safety Program - Outreach Meeting

Golden Gate Park Access & Safety Program - Outreach Meeting

Join Grow the Richmond and Streets for People as we welcome SFMTA to tell us more about the Golden Gate Park Access & Safety Program to discuss proposed changes to JFK and the surrounding streets in and around Golden Gate Park: https://www.sfmta.com/projects/golden-gate-park-access-and-safety-program

At the beginning of the pandemic, city officials moved to make JFK Drive between Kezar Drive and Transverse Drive as well as Conservatory Drive, creating a car-free space for the enjoyment of people all day and every day. They eventually added more car-free routes, creating an almost entirely car-free route to the beach.

However those changes were just for the duration of the COVID-19 emergency. Now Rec and Park and SFMTA are considered long-term, permanent changes for the streets in Golden Gate Park as well as streets nearby such as Fulton, including an exciting proposal to maintain a car-free route from the start of JFK Drive all the way out to Ocean Beach.

Come learn about the various proposals and provide your input to help bring more permanent space for people to enjoy outside of their cars. Register here to attend.

Save the Great Walkway Rally

Save the Great Walkway Rally

The transformation of the Great Highway into San Francisco's second most visited open space has been an inspiring silver lining of the pandemic.

Now, it’s scheduled to disappear overnight. Unless you get LOUD and help save our new park!

Last week a small group of politicians made a backroom deal to turn the park back into a highway, even as our climate emergency continues to worsen. On Monday, August 16, the Great Walkway will be turned over to cars on weekdays for the foreseeable future. Sunset District Supervisor Gordon Mar continues to call for a “compromise” that would bring cars back to the road permanently.

Don’t let these politicians get away with taking away our park. Don’t let them get away with ignoring the climate disaster unfolding in front of our eyes.

Join us on Sunday, August 15 for a rally to Save the Walkway.

Join a coalition of community groups for a rally on the Walkway to demand that our elected officials save the Great Walkway and keep it open to people, every day!

10:30AM Meet at Great Walkway and Judah

11:00AM Rally and speeches

11:30AM March to defend the Lincoln Gate

Afternoon Canvass the neighborhood and distribute window signs

What Does a Biden Administration Mean for Transit?

What Does a Biden Administration Mean for Transit?

This event has already happened. You can view a video of this event below.

With 2020 (finally) over, we're now just a few weeks away from having a transit-friendly administration in the White House and a Democratic-majority in the Senate. Streets for People is kicking off 2021 with an opportunity to hear from Scott Goldstein, Policy Director at Transportation for America, on what this might mean for sustainable transportation:

  • What's the outlook for federal funding in 2021 and beyond?

  • How does federal policy influence local transit and bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and what can the new administration change, now that Democrats control the Senate?

  • What can we expect from Pete Buttegieg as Secretary of Transportation?

  • What can advocates do to help ensure federal funding goes to sustainable transit and not just to cars?

There will be a presentation followed by audience Q&A!

Co-sponsored by Seamless Bay Area, Friends of Caltrain, and San Francisco Transit Riders!

The True Cost of Residential Street Parking

The True Cost of Residential Street Parking

This event has already happened. You can view a video of this event below.

Free or inexpensive street parking near home is a benefit that many take for granted, as residential parking permits range from $35 or less in San José to $144 annually in San Francisco. However, even residential permit holders often find themselves circling for parking at the end of the day, while individuals without cars receive little to no benefit from this valuable curb space. Is the public right-of-way the right place for parking private vehicles? What are the true costs and benefits of residential street parking, considering externalities such as racial justice and carbon impacts? If we as a society decide to change how we allocate and regulate curb space, what steps would be required and how could we ensure that our new approaches are equitable? Hear an expert panel discuss these questions and much more. Co-presented by Urban Environmentalists and Streets for People.
