Car-free, open to all, 24/7. The whole thing. No compromises. The campaign to keep the Great Highway open to people and closed to cars is reaching crunch time. On Tuesday the SFCTA board voted to accept the study that recommended the Great Highway remain closed to cars - but several supervisors voted to remove that recommendation from the report. It’s clear that keeping the Great Walkway is far from a done deal. We’ve been out on Valencia St asking people what they think about slow streets and shared spaces, how they could be improved, and how we can help make them permanent. Join our campaign to repurpose street space for people rather than cars!

It’s great to see people of all ages walking, riding, and rolling on the Great Walkway, even on a cloudy day. Let’s keep this space permanently car-free so that people can enjoy a safe space to exercise and play near the ocean!

With 2020 (finally) over, we're now just a few weeks away from having a transit-friendly administration in the White House. Streets for People is kicking off 2021 with an opportunity to hear from Scott Goldstein, Policy Director at Transportation for America, on what this might mean for sustainable transportation: - What's the outlook for federal funding in 2021 and beyond? - How does federal policy influence local transit and bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and what can the new administration change, even if Democrats don't win the Senate? - What can we expect from Pete Buttegieg as Secretary of Transportation? - What can advocates do to help ensure federal funding goes to sustainable transit and not just to cars? The last ferries leave San Francisco before the Christmas break. Happy Holidays from everyone at Streets for People! We’re a new organization, but we’ve already had success in persuading the SFMTA to keep protected bike lanes in the Better Market Street plan, and getting the MTC to drop their work from home mandate in favor of a plan to limit the number of car trips generated by major employers. We hope to build on these successes in the new year. Thank you to everyone who has worked with us and supported us!

We’re excited to see @sfmtaphoto getting ready to resume rail service, with the J-Church scheduled to start running again from Dec 19th. To ease crowding in the subway the J will no longer go underground and will instead terminate at Church & Duboce. The block of Church south of Market has been closed to cars to help passengers transfer to the subway, and a temporary mini-high platform is being built to accommodate people with disabilities. These are innovative strategies to quickly transform our streets to prioritize transit riders, and we’ll be very interested to see how they work out.
